Spain: President of Catalonia reiterates criticism of 'unfair' verdict for jailed leaders

Spain, Barcelona
October 17, 2019 at 14:43 GMT +00:00 · Published

Catalan President Quim Torra criticised the "unfair judgment" against the imprisoned Catalan leaders during an address at the Catalan Parliament in Barcelona on Thursday.

He also said that "we will never accept the sentence," since it is based on a "fabricated" story about the violence of independentism. In this regard, he added that he has always condemned this violence and will "do it again," referring to a demand by the acting President of Spain Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday.

In a press conference on Wednesday night in Barcelona, Torra had called for “calm” after three days of clashes and protests in the region and blamed the violence on a group of "infiltrators and provocateurs".

The protests came after Spain's Supreme Court convicted twelve independence leaders, including former Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras, for their role in the autonomous region's attempt to secession and holding an illegal independence referendum.
