Mexico: Lopez Obrador backs decision to free son of 'Chapo' Guzman

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed his support on Friday for the decision to release Ovidio Guzman, a son of druglord Joaquin 'el Chapo' Guzman, following an outbreak of violence on Thursday in the city of Culiacan, in the state of Sinaloa.

"They followed up on the problem and made decisions that I support, that I endorse, because the situation became very difficult and many citizens, many people, many human beings were at risk, and it was decided to protect people's lives and I agreed with that, because it is not about massacres,” Lopez Obrador said at his morning press conference in Oaxaca.

"The capture of a criminal can't be worth more than people's lives," he added.

On Thursday, federal forces captured Ovidio Guzman accidentally after a routine patrol, according to the official account of events. After the arrest, Sinaloa Cartel hitmen are reported to have arrived in Culiacan in armoured trucks with shootings and fires later reported throughout the city, resulting in clashes with federal forces. After the incidents, the security cabinet decided to release Guzman to "try to avoid more violence.”

So far, the whereabouts of the son of the 'Chapo' is unknown.
