Spain: Barcelona rises after another day of unrest - 152 injured and 12 arrested

Spain, Barcelona

Barcelona's city centre was covered in debris and rubble on Saturday, after Friday night's clashes between police and demonstrators.

Cleaning services worked hard to remove the remains and remove the loose paving stones after a night of unrest, which saw demonstrators burn containers and erect barricades in the streets adjacent to the police headquarters.

When asked about the riots, one of the residents said that "we don't know where so many violent people are coming from. We have been protesting for a long time and none of this has happened so far."

Friday was the fifth consecutive day of protests in Catalonia since the Spanish Supreme Court ruling against Catalan independence leaders.

At least 182 people wounded and 54 arrested on that day alone, according to local media citing police sources.

Barcelona experienced the greatest violence, with 152 people requiring medical attention and 12 arrested for public disorder and assaulting the security forces.
