Chile: Pinera suspends transport fare hikes as curfew is decreed in Santiago

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced that authorities are going to "suspend the increase in metro fares," for which he blamed "sudden and unexpected increases in the price of the dollar or oil," during a press conference in Santiago on Saturday, after days of demonstrations and clashes with police in the capital.

Pinera said he respects the right to peaceful demonstrations, but that "no one has the right to act with the brutal criminal violence" seen in the protests of recent days. "It is due to the serious attacks on public order and public safety, to the destruction of valuable infrastructure, both public and private, that we had to establish last night, the state of emergency," he added.

He also stated that General Javier Iturriaga "has the power to take additional measures such as a curfew if necessary," which was announced shortly after the press conference.

Several subway services were stopped in the Chilean capital during the demonstrations after protesters opened barriers and damaged ticket vending machines in response to the now suspended increase in public transport fares, which protesters found unacceptable when faced with rising living costs.
