Around 1500 people gathered at Placa Sant Jaume in Barcelona on Sunday in an act promoted by the Citizens' party under the slogan "for justice and co-existence" to defend the unity of the country and protest against the riots triggered by the sentence of the independence Catalan leaders.

The leader of Citizens Albert Rivera addressed the crowd and asked the President of the Spanish Government Pedro Sanchez, to apply Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution in order to oust the President of the Catalan Government Quim Torra.

"Let's stop Torra and return to coexistence," said Rivera in the rally held in front of the Catalan Government headquarters.

The Supreme Court of Spain condemned nine independence leaders, including former Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras, for their role in the Catalan sovereignty process of 2017.

The sentence against the Catalan leaders has triggered a wave of protests and riots that have left hundreds of injured and dozens of detainees.
