USA: Dallas left reeling from devastating tornado

United States, Dallas
October 21, 2019 at 23:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

The city of Dallas was left reeling from a tornado that cut a swathe of devastation and destruction through the Texan metropolis overnight, leaving thousands of people without power, as footage from Monday shows.

The footage shows the aftermath of the twister with trees torn from the earth and toppled onto buildings and cars, the rooftops of buildings peeled off and several power lines destroyed.

"I saw the tornado touch down last night, around 9:15 pm [local time]. The sky started swirling around, you could hear the rain going kind of sideways and straight from the force of the wind and all of a sudden we heard a whirling sound like a vacuum two hundred feet in the air," Lonn Wade, a tornado survivor recounted.

Following the tornado, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson released a statement on Twitter stating that the city was "incredibly fortunate" that no fatalities occurred during the storm.

According to reports, some local schools remained closed on Monday and large areas of Dallas remain without power.
