France: Juncker says EU parliament to ratify Brexit deal only after Westminster

France, Strasbourg
October 22, 2019 at 10:34 GMT +00:00 · Published

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the UK parliament should be the first to decide on the Brexit deal before it's ratified by the European Parliament. Juncker was speaking at its session in Strasbourg on Tuesday.

"We have done everything in our power to prepare the European Union for all eventualities irrespective of what is happening on the other side of the channel. We need now to watch events in Westminster very closely, but it is not possible, not imaginable, that this Parliament would ratify the agreement before Westminster will have ratified the agreement. First London, then Brussels and Strasbourg," said Juncker.

Juncker, who is nearing the end of his five-year term, added that 'it has pained me to spend so much of this mandate dealing with Brexit when I have thought of nothing less than how this union could better do for its citizens - waste of time and waste of energy.'

An agreement between the UK and the EU on Britain's orderly withdrawal from the bloc was announced last week. The deal now has to be approved by the European and British parliaments.
