Horse manure powers international equestrian show in Finland

Finland, Helsinki
October 28, 2019 at 12:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Helsinki International Horse Show literally runs on horsepower, as their electricity source is produced from horse manure.

The manure was filmed being collected in the Finnish capital on Saturday, as riders and their horses were warming up. Charging stations powered by poo were also on show.

Anssi Paalanen, the vice-president of Fortum HorsePower, explained how his company uses horse manure for electricity.

"We need only two centilitres of horse manure, so [a] very small amount is needed to charge a phone fully," said Paalanen.

"We've been using horse manure since 2015 and provided electricity to Horse Show since 2017," he added.

It is reported that the 100 tonnes of manure collected during the event helped produce more than 150 megawatt hours of energy, not only for the Horse Show but also for homes in Helsinki.
