Spain: Catalan independence rally met with counter protest in Barcelona

Spain, Barcelona
October 27, 2019 at 16:01 GMT +00:00 · Published

A Catalan independence rally held outside the Catalan government headquarters in Barcelona, on the second anniversary of the regions declaration of independence, was met with a counter demonstration of Spanish unionists on Sunday.

Footage shows dozens of pro-independence demonstrators gathered on the streets with a contingent of police separating them from the counter protesters.

"With this sentencing [against pro-independence leaders] we have finally realised that we are alone. The politicians are gone, Europe is gone, there's nobody. So because we are alone, we are on the streets. We'll do it on our own," one protester declared at the rally.

Protests were sparked across Catalonia after nine pro-independence leaders, who had organised the 2017 independence referendum, were found guilty of sedition, disobedience and misuse of public funds. They were sentenced to between nine and 13 years in prison by the Supreme Court of Madrid, hundreds have been injured in clashes and dozens placed under arrest during the protests.
