Germany: EU's decision on Brexit delay 'a good thing, a good solution' - govt spokesperson

German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert called the EU decision to extend Brexit until January 31, 2020 "a good thing, a good solution," while speaking at a weekly press conference in Berlin on Monday.

He said: "it is particularly positive that all 27 members of the EU have shown their unity on the issue. Now the ball is in the court of Great Britain and it is important that the time gained is used productively."

Commenting on the reported death of the leader of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Seibert said that the German government "thinks about all the victims of IS terror, about all the murdered and enslaved Yazidi men and women, about those who were murdered by the fanatics in the IS-controlled area, both domestic Muslims and foreign hostages."

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced that the IS leader has been killed in an operation led by US special forces in Syria. According to Trump's announcement, Baghdadi blew himself up with an explosives vest, after reaching a dead-end tunnel while attempting to flee.
