Belgium: Hearing on Puigdemont's European arrest warrant postponed until December 16

Belgium, Brussels
October 29, 2019 at 17:44 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Belgian judge who has to decide whether former President of the Government of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont will be arrested and handed over to the Spanish authorities decided to postpone the hearing until December 16 to give the parties more time to explain their allegations on Tuesday in Brussels.

Puigdemont himself confirmed the new date while speaking to the press after leaving the courthouse, and confirmed that "we will be here on December 16, we will put ourselves back in the hands of justice."

Footage shows the former president arriving at the Palace of Justice in Brussels and talking to the press on his way out.

The Belgian prosecutor's office requested that the former president of the Generalitat be handed over to Spain for sedition and embezzlement, the same crimes he is accused of in Spain. For its part, the defence will use the same defence as in the previous European arrest warrant and will argue that Puigdemont has immunity due to having been elected as an MEP.

A Spanish judge, Pablo Llarena, issued the third 'euro-warrant' against Puigdemont after the Supreme Court sentenced nine leaders of Catalonia’s pro-independence movement to between 9 and 13 years in prison for their roles in the unauthorised referendum in 2017.
