Spain: Students march in Barcelona demanding a ‘republic of workers and youth’

Spain, Barcelona
October 31, 2019 at 17:08 GMT +00:00 · Published

Around 500 students took to the streets of Barcelona on Thursday on the second day of the pro-Catalan independence student strike.

Footage shows eggs being thrown at police officers as hundreds marched carrying flags and signs in support of imprisoned pro-Catalan independence leaders. Most of the marchers are in secondary education, according to local media reports.

Held under the slogan ‘For the republic of workers and youth. We are the revolution,’ the march started at Plaza de la Universidad, where university students are currently camping, and advanced to Plaza de Sant Jaume, where the demonstrators carried out a sit-in in front of the Palau de la Generalitat, the headquarters of the Catalan government.

Barcelona and nearby municipalities have been rocked by demonstrations since Spain's Supreme Court jailed nine politicians for between nine and 13 years for their role in Catalonia's secession attempt and an illegal independence referendum in 2017.
