China: Beijing won't 'tolerate challenges' to 'one country, two systems' - People's Congress

China won't "tolerate challenges" to the 'one country, two systems,' model in Hong Kong, and will firmly safeguard the long-term stability there and in Macao, a senior Chinese official said in Beijing on Friday. China will also seek to improve the way a Hong Kong leader is appointed and replaced, said parliament official, Shen Chunyao.

China has repeatedly reaffirmed its support for Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and her government, but did not expand on potential policy steps Beijing has planned.

The party "will not tolerate any act of splitting the country or endangering national security, and resolutely prevent and contain external forces from interfering in Hong Kong and Macao affairs and carrying out separatist, subversive, infiltration or destructive activities," said Shen.

"No matter how the international situation changes, the door of China's opening-up will be wider and wider, the business environment will be better and better, its ties with the world economy will be closer," Deputy Director of the General Office of the Central Financial and Economic Affairs Commission, Han Wenxiu stated.

Ongoing demonstrations in Hong Kong over the last few months are focused on fears that China is trying to undermine the 'two systems, one country' system that allows the people of Hong Kong to enjoy more freedoms than those of mainland China, and dates back to 1997.
