Spain, Barcelona
November 05, 2019 at 00:32 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands protested against the visit of King Felipe VI and his family to Barcelona on Monday. Demonstrators gathered in front of the Palacio de Congresos, where the Spanish monarch was presenting the Princess of Girona Foundation awards.

Footage shows groups of demonstrators burning upside down pictures of King Felipe VI while chanting slogans such as "Catalonia has no king", "Freedom to political prisoners" and "Out with the Bourbons".

The protest was organised by the Committees of Defense of the Republic (CDR), under the slogan "Neither a King nor fear".

Scuffles erupted between demonstrators blocking the building’s entrance and individuals attending the ceremony. The leader of the Popular Party in Barcelona City Hall, Josep Bou, was booed and heckled by protesters.

Mossos d'Esquadra Mobile Brigade riot police (Brimo) formed a police line across Avenida Diagonal, and alongside National Police forming a security perimeter around the building, blocking demonstrators from reaching the building. No injuries or arrests were reported.
