Germany: Berlin forbids actors from working as 'soldiers' at Checkpoint Charlie

Germany, Berlin
November 05, 2019 at 16:18 GMT +00:00 · Published

The city of Berlin recently revoked permits for actors dressed as solders posing for pictures with tourists near Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin.

According to reports, the ban was introduced after an undercover police investigation confirmed that some of the actors were demanding money, sometimes aggressively, for those pictures.

Tourists who visited the attraction on Tuesday had different views on the incident. "I think it is not a bad idea that the city is taking control of the situation. This is a historical place, it's a very meaningful place for other people," said Julian, from London.

Chan, from Frankfurt, criticised the ban. "I find it really stupid at some extent, because I think the artists have the right to choose by themselves and I think the city doesn't have much right to say anything about it."

During the Cold War, Checkpoint Charlie was the main point of control at the borders between East and West Germany. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, the government invested heavily in the area and soon became one of the most recognisable tourist attractions in the German capital.
