The World’s Strongest Disabled Man? Former US marine squats stones despite losing arm function

United States, Columbus
November 06, 2019 at 05:41 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thirteen years ago, former US marine James Spurgin was on his motorbike home after work when he was involved in a collision. He woke up a week later to discover that he had lost function in his right arm. Spurgin, however, saw opportunity where most would not. On Saturday RUPTLY caught up with him in Columbus, Ohio where he’s now based.

Spurgin has been catapulted to the forefront of the adaptive athlete community thanks to his Atlas Stone heroics.

Despite all the winners’ medals, Spurgin refuses to rest on his laurels and he actually hopes to set records to further cement his place in the pantheon of adaptive athletes.

“I think one of the best things someone could have is to have a lofty goal to go after,” he said. “I’m going to go set some of those [records] and see if it motivates more people to come out and maybe turn their lives around like this sort of has for me.”

Lifting stones can be traced back to ancient Celtic and Scandinavian tradition, and have since become a staple in strongman competitions the world over.

The Atlas Stone sees competitors attempt to lift the heaviest boulder onto a wall in a nod to its age-old origins.
