Poland: WADA 'much better' placed to handle doping cases at Tokyo 2020 – Reedie

Poland, Katowice
November 05, 2019 at 22:10 GMT +00:00 · Published

Departing World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) president Craig Reedie believes that doping scandals which blighted previous Olympic Games would be "unlikely" to happen at Tokyo 2020 due to new measures.

The Scot said the agency had invested in more personnel and departments to prevent such situations from arising, when speaking to journalists in the Polish city of Katowice on Tuesday.

"I think we are much better at spotting those issues, we now have 11 in our intelligence and investigations departments. We have a much better compliance structure, we audit NADOs [National Anti-Doping Organizations], we audit international federations. We know much more about the business than we did before," he said.

Commenting on the recent Rodchenkov Anti-Doping Act, Reedie said they were monitoring the situation and that its terms were "perfectly acceptable and would benefit sport in the United States."

WADA's Director General Olivier Niggli expressed his support for the call to store samples of athletes for ten years.

And finally, WADA lawyer Richard Young set out the case for his new World Anti-Doping Code.

The fifth WADA World Conference on Doping in Sport kicked off in Katowice, Poland, on Tuesday and will last until November 7. Participants will discuss the new 2021 World Anti-Doping code and elect the agency's new president and vice-president.
