Hungary: Al-Baghdadi's sister and brother-in-law captured - Erdogan

Hungary, Budapest
November 07, 2019 at 20:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the sister and brother-in law of the late self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi were captured by Turkish forces in the Syrian town of Azaz, during a speech in Budapest on Thursday.

"We caught al-Baghdadi's older sister, with her husband, in Azaz, they're in our hands now," Erdogan said during a speech alongside Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. "Most recently we caught 13 from his close circle, they're also in our hands as of now."

"Neither the United States have been able to remove these terrorists from the area within 120 hours, nor Russia have been able to in 150 hours," Erdogan continued.

"Now that area between Tal-Abyad and Ras-al-Ayn is in our control, let us hold an international donors meeting and let us get some support," the Turkish president said.

On Wednesday, Erdogan announced that Turkish forces detained one of al-Baghdadi's wives.

Baghdadi rose to prominence after internment at the hands of the US. He subsequently became leader of hardline militant group and declared himself caliph of all Muslims, controlling vast swathes of Iraq and Syria.
