Bolivia: Supporters and opponents of govt clash on La Paz streets

Bolivia, Plurinational State of, La Paz

Supporters and opponents of Bolivian President Evo Morales clashed on La Paz streets on Thursday, with projectiles being thrown, debris set on fire and smoke filling the streets.

Police were also seen firing tear gas at protesters, who hid behind makeshift shields. According to reports, several protesters and police officers were injured.

The clashes broke out after the opposition leader Luis Fernando Camacho called for Morales to leave, speaking at opposition protests earlier on Thursday. Camacho reportedly intends to hand over a resignation paper for Morales to sign, the move which might have fueled the rival protests.

Protests broke out across Bolivia over disputed election results which gave President Evo Morales enough votes to avoid a run-off. Despite the announcement that the numbers will be audited, the protests continued as the opposition demands a new vote without Morales taking part.

Morales, who served three terms as president since 2006, ran for a fourth term despite a 2016 referendum voting down a constitutional amendment allowing him to do so. The supreme court nullified the results of the referendum in 2017, ruling public officials had no term limits.
