Iraq: Large-scale anti-government protests continue in Baghdad

Iraq, Baghdad
November 08, 2019 at 21:22 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands took part in large scale demonstrations sparked by the resentment against the government as weeks of protests continued in Baghdad on Friday.

"We are revolutionaries and we want to change the regime, change the country, and the constitution, we want to change those people who stole Iraq," stated one protester.

People could be seen blocking the streets, chanting, waving Iraqi flags as well as lighting candles in the capital.

"So far, the demonstrators have not seen any change, and none of the demands have been met. Government in the valley and the people in another valley, so far nothing has been achieved on the ground. What has been achieved so far is more security mobilisation and repression of protesters, nothing more," said one demonstrator.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric called for "urgent action" at a press conference earlier in November regarding a report released by the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) that found "serious human rights violations and abuses."

The United Nations condemned the situation after an estimated 97 people were killed and thousands injured in the anti-government demonstrations between October 25 and November 4, according to a UN report.

Sixteen of those deaths were attributed to demonstrators being struck by tear gas canisters.

Intensified protests started on October 25 were sparked by deep-seated corruption, unemployment and lack of basic services.
