Spain: Far-right VOX party holds final rally ahead of elections

Spain, Madrid
November 08, 2019 at 23:04 GMT +00:00 · Published

The leader of Spain's far-right VOX party Santiago Abascal said he would "build the patriotic alternative Spain needs" if elected in Sunday's national elections at his party's final rally in Madrid.

"If Spaniards support us, our pulse will not shake when suspending the autonomy [in Catalonia], illegalising the separatist parties and ordering the arrest and taking legal actions against the coupster Torra," Abascal said. He added that they do not know yet how many parliament seats they will get, but they will use the result "to build the patriotic alternative Spain needs."

Abascal, who has previously criticised the current government for exhuming the remains of dictator Francisco Franco, said he would ban separatist parties to ensure "national unity" and described the current crisis in Catalonia as a "live coup."

Spain will return to the polls for the second time in 2019, with a general election set for 10 November. The winner of the April 28 elections, the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), was unable to form a government amid months of political instability.
