Hong Kong: Police fire tear gas as protesters vandalise shopping mall

China, Hong Kong
November 10, 2019 at 20:06 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters stormed into a shopping mall in Hong Kong on Sunday and destroyed several shops, two days after the death of a demonstrator in violent clashes with police.

A group of demonstrators can be seen trashing a store, kicking its cardboard walls and destroying the products inside. Using a megaphone, police told protesters to leave the premises and fired tear.

Roads were blocked by protesters sitting behind umbrellas and setting trash cans on fire. According to reports, several people were arrested.

Alex Chow Tsz-lok, a 22-year-old student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, died on Friday after falling from a multi-story parking garage as he was reportedly fleeing tear gas dispersed by the police during a weekend protest.

Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by months of clashes between protesters and the authorities.
