Hong Kong: Angry commuters take on protesters

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong
November 11, 2019 at 16:19 GMT +00:00 · Published

Morning commuters in Hong Kong had an altercation with anti-government protesters blocking roads and aiming to disrupt traffic in what they dubbed "Operation Dawn" on Monday.

Protesters were seen putting barriers and bus stops on the road before a group of commuters confronted them, resulting in scuffles. Police eventually stepped in, arresting at least one protester and checking the IDs of others in the area.

MTR services were also disrupted, provoking anger among travellers.

Two people were seriously injured during Monday's demonstrations. A police officer shot an unarmed student at close range, while a pro-Beijing protester was doused in flammable liquid set on fire after arguing with protesters.

Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and the authorities.
