France: Lavrov jokes that Russia ‘will resolve’ 2020 US elections

France, Paris

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov poked fun at the ongoing political situation in the US by joking about election meddling, speaking at the Paris Peace Forum in the French capital on Tuesday.

When asked about how Russia was getting ready for the 2020 US elections, Lavrov said that Moscow "will resolve the problem, don't worry," eliciting a laugh from the audience.

Russia's top diplomat also jokingly asked how come the Kremlin hadn't already been blamed for the current events in Bolivia.

"Somehow we have not been accused of the coup in Bolivia, and this is strange. Something is happening in the minds of those who normally create geopolitical agenda," he joked.

Going on to discuss the Syrian crisis, Lavrov urged the Kurds to start negotiations with Damascus.

The foreign minister said that the Kurds had put too much trust in Washington and ignored Moscow's calls to establish dialogue with the Syrian government.

"They believed that they would be always covered by the United States. When the United States made this twist, the Kurds started asking us to help to start a dialogue with the government, which we were ready to do."

"But then, as the Americans said 'We are coming back to control the oil fields', they again lost interest in this dialogue. So they need some consistency," concluded Lavrov.

The second edition of the Paris Peace Forum takes place on November 11-13 and gathers together some of thirty heads of state and governments.
