Spain: Socialist party and Unidas Podemos agree on coalition

Spain, Madrid
November 12, 2019 at 15:25 GMT +00:00 · Published

Acting prime minister and leader of the Spanish Socialist Worker’s Party (PSOE) Pedro Sanchez signed a preliminary agreement with the leader of Unidas Podemos party Pablo Iglesias to form a coalition government in Spain, the first in the country's history.

"The commitment of both formations is to propitiate a proposal to unblock the situation in Spain" said Sanchez prior to the signing of the document in the Parliament in Madrid on Tuesday.

The leader of Unidas Podemos, commented that his party has committed to a government that "combines the experience of the PSOE with the courage of Unidas Podemos", which is the "best vaccine against the extreme right".

In addition, he said that they will "seek the support of other groups to this agreement to face the legislature.

Sanchez, said that the agreement presented today "was not possible" after the previous elections although they were "close to achieving it. "We are aware of the disappointment among progressive voters," he said, and stressed that "the political project is so exciting that it overcomes any disagreement" they may have had. He has defined the future executive as "a completely progressive government" in which "the only thing that will not fit will be hatred and confrontation between Spaniards.

Although details of the structure of the executive have not been offered, Spanish media take it for granted that Iglesias would become vice-president.

This announcement became public only 48 hours after the general elections held which produced the most fragmented parliament in recent decades. PSOE was once again the biggest party, but it failed to achieve an absolute majority allowing it to govern alone.
