Bolivian police officers and citizens of La Paz celebrated a mass on Sunday in a symbolic effort to help pacify the situation in the country in the wake of the escalating violence that has followed Evo Morales' resignation as president.

The event, which, took place in the Avaroa square of the capital city, was attended by police officers and dozens of people with white flags, held as a sign of peace.

Tensions and deadly confrontations between supporters of the former indigenous leader and the security forces have increased.

Regarding recent clashes in Cochabamba, the general commander of the Police, Antonio Montero, declared: "In the city of Cochabamba some confrontations are still taking place, but their intensity is diminishing, and the premise we have is always to exhaust dialogue.”

Earlier this month, Evo Morales announced his resignation after several weeks of protests over the results of the October 20 elections.

Opposition Senator Jeanine Anez declared herself interim president in a session of Parliament after Morales fled to Mexico.

Morales' departure and Anez’s recognition by the Senate as the new president increased tensions between supporters and opponents of the former indigenous leader.
