A 17th century replica of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa sold for €552,500 ($611,950) in a Paris auction on Tuesday.

Prospective buyers gathered at Sotheby's for the auction, where bids started at around €50,000 ($55,000) before the price escalated to over half a million.

"It's the most famous painting in the world and this is a wonderful very high-quality copy from the 17th century," said Baulkje Coenen, director of the department of ancient paintings at Sotheby's Paris. "The quality is very high you can see it in her face, her face is really wonderfully painted and also her hands and it actually has the allure of the most famous image in the world."

Leonardo Da Vinci's original portrait of the Mona Lisa, painted during Italy's Renaissance period, can be seen at the Louvre Museum in Paris, where it has been exhibited for more than two centuries. It was assessed at $100 million in 1962, or $850 million (€770 million) today, taking inflation into account.
