USA: Google employees stage rally after two activist colleagues suspended

United States, San Francisco
November 22, 2019 at 23:45 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hundreds of Google employees staged a rally in front of the company's offices in San Francisco on Friday to protest against the suspension of two of their colleagues. Rebecca Rivers and Laurence Berland were placed on administrative leave after they allegedly accessed and shared internal documents, which Google says were confidential.

But protesters say that the suspension was a retaliation after both employees campaigned for raising awareness about Google's privacy and hate speech policies.

"Laurence was involved in circulating a petition to raise awareness around Youtube's proliferation of hate-speech against LGBTQ people on its platform, as well as attending weekly meetings talking about broader-organising issues. The company would have been aware of this. Rebecca was placed on administrative leave, was also involved in circulating a petition around Google's potential contract with Customs and Border Patrol. Both of them were brought into interrogations. They are not accused of anything. But we believe that Google could be trying to make an example out of these two," said Eddie Grystar, one of protesters.
