China: Beijing vows retaliation after Trump signs HK Democracy Act into law

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said that the signing of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act by US President Donald Trump will jeopardise "China-US relations and cooperation in important areas," promising that sooner or later counter-measures will be introduced by the Chinese government, during a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday.

"The signing seriously interfered in Hong Kong's affairs and China's internal affairs, and seriously violated international law and the basic norms governing international relations. This is a naked act of hegemony, which the Chinese government and people are firmly opposed to," Shuang said.

He added that "our determination to implement the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy is unwavering. Our determination to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests is unwavering. We advise the US not to act on its own will, otherwise China will resolutely counteract it. All consequences must be borne by the United States."

"The fundamental purpose of the United States is to undermine Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, 'One Country, Two Systems,' and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," Shuang said.

On November 19, the US Senate passed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act. The act obligates the US government to annually review the functioning of the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy and involves sanctions over alleged human rights abuses in the former British colony.
