Germany: We have no doubts over UK justice system – Berlin on Assange case

Germany, Berlin

German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rainer Breul said Berlin has "no doubts over the British constitutional system," regarding the case of WikiLeaks founder Julian, who is currently incarcerated in London's Belmarsh Prison.

"We continue to adhere to our position and we don't have any reason to doubt the constitutional procedure of the British justice system as well as compliance with the international minimum standards," the spokesperson said in Berlin on Monday.

He continued: "There is a special procedure that one can put into action, for example, when not being satisfied with conditions of detention. That what has been done in the Assange case. There was a hearing and the decision of the court. We have no doubts over the British constitutional system."

Government spokesperson Steffen Seibert commented on the decision of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to reject renegotiations on the coalition agreement with her junior partner, the Social Democrats (SPD), as the newly elected SPD co-leaders, Norbert Walter-Borjans and Saskia Esken, cast doubt over their further coalition with Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU).

"The chancellor is absolutely ready for a new round of talks, as it should always be in a coalition between partners. However, any negotiations regarding a new coalition agreement is not planned," Seibert said.
