China: Beijing sanctions NGOs it holds responsible for Hong Kong unrest

China, Beijing

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Hua Chunying announced sanctions the Chinese government would be implementing against non-governmental organisations and other "bad influences" in Hong Kong's crisis, during a briefing on Tuesday in Beijing.

"The National Endowment for Democracy and other non-governmental organizations have provided financial, material, and organisational training support to the rioters who oppose China and destabilise Hong Kong. They strongly abet them to commit extremely violent crimes and instigate separatist activities for "Hong Kong independence". They bear great responsibility for the current turmoil in Hong Kong. So these organizations deserve to be sanctioned and should pay their price," Hua said.

She did not comment on a ban preventing the US Navy from visiting Hong Kong, which came as a response to US legislation supporting Hong Kong protesters.

Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by the now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and the authorities.
