USA: Mitt Romney breaks with Republicans over Ukraine meddling in 2016 election

United States, Washington DC
December 03, 2019 at 18:21 GMT +00:00 · Published

Republican Senator Mitt Romney said there was "no evidence" Ukraine interfered with the 2016 US presidential elections, in comments to reporters from the US Capitol on Tuesday.

"I saw no evidence from our intelligence community, nor from the representatives today from the Department of State, that there is any evidence of any kind that suggests that Ukraine interfered in our elections. We have ample evidence that Russia interfered in our elections," said Romney after State Department official David Hale's hearing with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The former presidential candidate broke with several of his colleagues in the Senate, who have embraced a theory that Ukraine meddled in the election. An opinion not shared by the intelligence community.

The impeachment inquiry in Congress is currently investigation whether Trump put pressure on Ukraine to launch probes into his Democratic rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter for political gain.

If found guilty in a majority vote in the House of Representatives, Trump will face an impeachment trial in the Senate. A two-thirds majority would then be required to remove the president from office.
