Iraq: Baghdad protesters turn 14-storey tower block into unofficial demo HQ

Iraq, Baghdad

A building overlooking Baghdad's Tahrir Square has become the strategic headquarters for anti-government protesters, as shown in footage from Thursday.

Known as the 'Turkish Restaurant,' due to formally housing a popular rooftop dining spot, and also called 'Mount Uhud' by protesters, the 14-storey building is draped with Iraqi flags and banners setting out demonstrators' demands.

'Mount Uhud' stands between Tahrir Square and the al-Jumhuriya Bridge, which leads to Baghdad's Green Zone, where government buildings and the US embassy are located. The former commercial centre had lain empty after being damaged during the US-led invasion in 2003, until protesters took over the building in October.

The name 'Mount Uhud' refers to a battle fought by the first Muslims in 625.

Over 400 people were killed and tens of thousands injured in the crackdown on anti-government protests across Iraq in the last two months.

On Sunday, parliament approved the resignation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi who was forced to step down under pressure from demonstrators.
