China: Police to adopt both 'humanistic' and hard approach to protesters - HK police chief

China, Beijing
December 07, 2019 at 13:24 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hong Kong Police Commissioner Chris Ping-keung Tang hoped for "peaceful" protests but warned of "reactional action" in case of violence ahead of planned Sunday demonstration. He was speaking to reporters in Beijing on Saturday after his two day "courtesy visit" to the mainland to meet senior Chinese officials.

"For the procession of tomorrow I really hope that it will be conduct[ed] in a peaceful manner, I think apart from me this is the hope of the Hong Kong people that the protest will be conducted in a peaceful way. In case of any violence, as I said, if anything like arson, throwing petrol bombs, damage on shops, we will take reactional action on that. For minor incidents, we will try to adopt a humanistc or flexible approach," said Tang.

He also reiterated China's backing of Hong Kong police saying that, "they recognised the effort of the police in the past six months and they also revealed their unfailing support to the police."

The Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) has called for a massive rally in Hong Kong on Sunday.

Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by the now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and the authorities.
