Hong Kong: Massive anti-govt. protest hits the city streets

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong
December 08, 2019 at 18:56 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters took to the streets for an anti-government demonstration in Hong Kong on Sunday, urging the Chinese government and Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam to meet their five key demands. Police say some 200,000 people took part while protest organisers estimate participation at 800,000.

Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) activist Jimmy Sham dubbed the rally as Lam's 'last chance' to meet the protesters' demands. These include an investigation into alleged police brutality and misconduct; the release of arrested protesters; as well as Lam's resignation and the introduction of universal suffrage.

The protesters flooded the streets near Victoria Park while marching and chanting in a quest to be heard in the presence of riot police. The protest marked almost six months to the day of the June anti-government protetsts.

The protests were sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill but have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and the authorities.
