UK: Mystery red noses added to Banksy homeless reindeer mural

Street artist Banksy's latest work was vandalised on Tuesday after appearing on a wall in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter over the weekend and having a bright red nose mysteriously added on Monday.

The mural depicts two reindeers pulling a bench on which the artist photographed a homeless man named Ryan sleeping in an Instagram post. Red noses were then mysteriously added to the reindeers on Monday night, with witnesses claiming the spray painter had talked to them before casually jumping the barricade and adding the two red noses.

"I do not think it is really that much of a problem. I do not know, depends how Banksy feels about it," said one local, with another adding "it is nice that someone else thought they could come along and add to it [...] Art is never finished, some people say, so, yeah."

One passerby said she thought Banksy himself may have come along in the night and added the red noses.

After Monday's event security guards and barriers were put in place, with the mural being covered by transparent perpex sheeting to protect the artwork. The perspex was in turn later sprayed on by a vandal with the tag 'OUSL'.

"Somebody has just come along, moaned about the fact that we were looking after Banksy, we're kind of like being biased towards him, and has defaced the mural. But luckily, it is covered in plastic so it came off quite easily, so we have managed to clear it up," said a so-called 'ambassador' in charge of cleaning the vandalised artwork.
