Argentina: Thousands celebrate as Alberto Fernandez sworn in as president

Argentina, Buenos Aires

Thousands celebrated the swearing-in of Alberto Fernandez as Argentina’s new president in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

The Peronist leader arrived to the inauguration ceremony driving his own vehicle, waving to thousands of supporters gathered along his route to the Casa Rosada.

The new Argentinian leader swore "for God, the homeland and the holy gospels, to carry out the position of president of the nation with patriotism," the same words used by his vice-president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

In his first speech as president, Fernandez promised to “summon the unity of all Argentina, in pursuit of the construction of a new social citizen contract. A social contract that is fraternal and supportive.”

"Today people came to celebrate, they came to defend their lost rights" said Romina López, a resident of Buenos Aires. "Now what's coming is a lot of work, effort, struggle, and not giving up. Everyone, all [have to go] forward, and be embraced. That was how we resisted these four years," she added.

Referring to the previous mandate of former President Mauricio Macri, Gustavo Copes, another resident who joined the celebrations, stated that "these four years of Macri have been an absolute setback in terms of economic policies, in terms of social policies, and in terms of having a sovereign, free, just country.”
