USA: They might soon accuse us diplomats of taking doping – Lavrov on criticism of his Trump meeting

United States, Washington DC

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called it absurd for the US media to criticize the format of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, which took place in private on Tuesday in the White House.

During the press conference, one journalist mentioned that the head of the Special Committee on Intelligence of the U.S. House of Representatives, Adam Schiff, called the meeting a "success of Russian propaganda.”

Lavrov responded, “If Mr. Schiff describes in this way elementary contacts at the level of foreign ministers for any other country and the fact that the foreign minister is received by the president of the host country, I do not rule out that very soon, if he considers it a triumph of Russian diplomacy, maybe our diplomats will be accused of doping and will demand that we be involved in criminal proceedings.”

Answering a question about the development of relations between Moscow and Washington, the Russian Foreign Minister said that "President Trump sincerely understands the benefits of good relations between Russia and the United States for Americans, for American business, for the United States as a whole, and for the situation in the world".

In addition, Sergei Lavrov said that on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, he confirmed to Donald Trump the invitation from the Russian side to the celebrations dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War on May 9, 2020. "President Trump is considering it. We hope that if such an opportunity arises, of course, it will be possible to held a full-scale bilateral conversation," said Lavrov.
