Germany: Berlin calls on Turkey and Libya to 'follow maritime borders' per intl. law

Turkey and Libya should "follow maritime borders in accordance with the current international law," said a German government spokesperson on Wednesday, when asked about the recent deal between the two states on their maritime borders in the Mediterranean Sea.

Speaking during the weekly federal government press conference in Berlin, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr added that Berlin calls "on Turkey and Libya to respect the sovereignty and the sovereign rights of all EU member states."

"I can gladly tell you, that we explicitly share the solidarity position of the European Foreign Commission with Greece and Cyprus," Adebahr continued, "our position is clear. Maritime borders have to follow the current Law of the Sea under participation of all affected conflict parties, coastal nations is the right word - and of course this also applies to the Mediterranean Sea.''

Germany has no information about a deportation request from the Russian government in relation to the Georgian man who was shot dead in Berlin's Tiergarten park in August, commented government spokesperson Steffen Seibert.

"We demand cooperation from the Russian side and to provide us with the information, the information they have," stated Seibert.

The Federal Press Conference takes place three times per week in Berlin.
