Algeria: Thousands join anti-election protests on eve of presidential vote

Algeria, Algiers
December 11, 2019 at 17:06 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands took to the streets of Algiers to protest against the upcoming presidential elections on Wednesday, one day before polls open on Thursday.

From the early morning, protesters swarmed into the city centre to express their categorical rejection of the elections, which protesters want to postpone until after the wholesale reform of the political system and the removal from power of officials from the old government.

A major security presence was deployed in the main streets of Algiers to prevent demonstrators from gathering in front of the Grande Poste, a symbolic location for protests in the city and one of its most well known landmarks.

Several protesters were reportedly arrested by the police.

The protests began in February after 82-year-old then-president Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced he would be running for a fifth term in office. While he dropped his bid and resigned in April, the demonstrations for a complete overhaul of the political system continued.
