France: Police unions rally in Paris to protest against pension reform

France, Paris
December 11, 2019 at 19:11 GMT +00:00 · Published

Major police unions, including the National Police Alliance and UNSA, rallied in Paris on Wednesday to condemn the pension reform proposed by the government.

Protesters were blowing whistles, waving flags and lighting up flares in front of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council building.

"Today we are being made fun of. So, it's not going to calm down the anger of police officers when we hear this kind of things. It's better to be deaf, unfortunately. So we will amplify the measure. We will make it so that we are heard, because today if they don't listen to us, well we will have to wait a bit longer, but one way or another, sooner or later, they will have no choice," said Fabien Vanhemelryck, Secretary-General of National Police Alliance.

On Wednesday, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced the details of the universal pension reform system that the government is planning to introduce.

The proposal triggered strikes across France that disrupted rail transport and closed factories.
