Spain: Sanchez accepts mandate to form government

Spain, Madrid

Spain's acting president Pedro Sanchez announced that he had accepted King Felipe VI's mandate to try to form a government at a press conference in Madrid on Wednesday.

"I informed the King that I am willing to accept the mandate he entrusts to me. A mandate, which is a direct consequence of the mandate expressed in the ballot boxes again by the Spaniards, by a majority, in the general elections of last November 10," said Sanchez, adding that it is a task he assumes "with honour, responsibility, and enormous gratitude to the Spanish people as a whole."

The acting president also took the opportunity to criticize "the far-right and the Popular Party, which "have said no. They install themselves in the blockade. They do not want to facilitate the formation of this government. In other words, they will have to explain whether or not they want third elections in this country."

On the other hand, he highlighted the disposition of Unidas Podemos to participate in the proposal of a coalition government, which is "unprecedented" in the history of Spain, as well as the willingness of Esquerra Republicana to facilitate it, as long as an agreement is reached.
