UK: Pro-Assange protesters picket Westminster court during hearing

United Kingdom, London
December 13, 2019 at 15:45 GMT +00:00 · Published

A handful of people held a rally in support of incarcerated WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, outside the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London, on Friday, where an administrative hearing was taking place to extend his detainment.

The administrative hearing takes place every 28 days, due to an article in the UK law, which suggests that a person cannot be held in prison longer than 29 days.

The protesters were filmed holding placards and banners demanding that his extradition to the United States is prevented.

"Julian represents the hope of humanity because people have to be informed. We talk a lot about democracy. Democracy is for people, it is not for herd of cattle, and it is not for people who are sheep-like, who are intimidated, who are afraid, and also confused and lied to. Remember, Hitler lied to the German people and he was democratically elected, the majority voted for him. So it shows, of course, we are for democracy but we have to have people who know what is happening. Assange was informing us, and that's why he's being prosecuted," said Eric, an activist.

Julian Assange is still fighting a bid to extradite him to the US and is currently being held in London's high security Belmarsh prison. Sixty doctors have expressed concerns about his health and are attempting to have him moved to a hospital.
