UK: Johnson says Brexit deal will be passed 'before Christmas'

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson told supporters that his Brexit withdrawal agreement would be passed "before Christmas," at a post-election campaign event in Sedgefield on Saturday.

"We have 100 percent support and we can get it in before Christmas. We have just been going over the timetable, we can definitely get it in before Christmas and then we are out on January 31," said Johnson.

The prime minister also repeated his key campaign pledges as he thanked Conservative party activists for their support at the event in the Sedgefield constituency once represented by former Labour prime minister Tony Blair.

Johnson also talked about investment in public services, repeating campaign pledges of 40 new hospitals, 50,000 more nurses and 20,000 more police officers.

In Thursday's general election the Conservative party secured its biggest majority since the 1980s with 365 seats, while the Labour party won 203 seats, down 42 from 2017, the party's worst result since 1935.
