Russia: No breakthrough in Donbass talks between Zelenskiy and Putin, but ‘positive’ movement – Peskov

Russian Federation, Moscow
December 16, 2019 at 09:37 GMT +00:00 · Published

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said the so-called Normandy Four format of talks on the Donbass conflict in Paris yielded positive results, speaking at a ‘Bolshaya Igra’ [Big Game] TV show in Moscow on Sunday.

The spokesperson stated that even though Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy disagreed on a number of issues, “Nevertheless, they have started a dialogue and it can be considered a positive result”.

“Have we reached any milestone breakthrough in implementing the Minsk agreements? No. And probably no one really expected that, because it was impossible,” added Peskov.

Discussing the ongoing talks between Moscow and Kiev on a new gas transit agreement, Peskov said reaching a new deal was dependent on Russia's Gazprom being able to retain its cost-effectiveness in the transit route.

He also went on to comment on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) decision to ban Russia from the world’s top sporting events for four years.

“The fact that WADA decision is highly politicised is definite. Our president talked about this during the press conference in Paris,” he said, urging the Russian sports authorities to lodge an appeal against the ban with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
