Argentina: Female pro footballer works second job at Burger King to make ends meet

Argentina, Buenos Aires

For Maira Quintili, who has successfully made a career as a pro football player for the Defensores de Belgrano in the Primera Division A of Argentine Women’s Football, it’s still only a part-time job, as she has to work a second job at one of the Burger King restaurants in the Once neighbourhood of Buenos Aires to make ends meet.

Footage filmed on Tuesday shows Maira taking orders, preparing food and drink and communicating with customers. Right after her shift at the fast-food chain, she rushes straight to the football pitch for a training session as a goalkeeper.

"When I was younger, my mother went to the [football] club and looked at me angrily, very hysterical," Maira recalls her childhood memories, adding "My mother yelled at me and brought me home."

She continued: "Today my mum understands that football has moved forward, that things have changed, that we live in another century and that today I really do what I like."

Maira went on to say that despite being a pro football player, she needs a second job in order to support herself, something which male players of an equivalent level do not need to do.

“What I earn at Burger King is what I live with, that is the truth, I need both jobs, the sports related one and Burger [King] to live."

Thankfully, Maira says, her managers are very flexible and support her efforts to play football, and help her to change shifts on short notice when necessary.

Maira is dreaming to become part of Argentina's national football team, saying her biggest idols are Brazilian forward Marta Viera da Silva, who has recently made footballing history after she has scored in five separate World Cup competitions, and former US Women's National team goalkeeper Hope Solo.
