Egypt unveiled a historic sinagogue after years of renovation in Alexandria on Friday. The $6.2 million (5.6 million euros) project was reopened in a ceremony by the Minister of Antiquities and Tourism Khaled Anani, opened the synagogue, which have a capacity of around 700 persons.

The first restoration works since 1881 began three years ago after the building suffered some damage due to weather and rain conditions.

"The Eliyahu Hanavi Temple was built by a Jewish sect in 1354 A.D. Unfortunately, Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798 A.D. destroyed the temple in order to build a fortress," said Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

"To me, it is a festive day," said Magda Haroun, the head of Jewish community in Egypt, adding that "no one has been talking about us [Jews], but now they do. This temple was built by Egyptian hands and funding."

Only a small number of Jews still live in Egypt. The hostilities between Egypt and Israel forced most of the country's Jews to leave more than 60 years ago.
