Mexico: Biologists rescue turtles affected by red tide after hundreds die

Mexico, Mazunte
January 14, 2020 at 10:56 GMT +00:00 · Published

Environmental technicians from Mexico are rushing to save the turtle population on the coast of Oaxaca, after hundreds of turtles died due to a red tide, an environmental phenomenon caused by an increase in microalgae in the water.

Images filmed on Monday show the rehabilitation of rescued turtles at the Mexican Turtle Center in Mazunte.

The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) has so far registered 292 turtles that have died from red tide poisoning.

"It's an algal bloom, induced by global warming, the temperatures of the currents and particularly pollution," explained a CONANP technician.

The Mexican Turtle Center is treating 11 specimens to provide medicine for their early recovery.

"They are under treatment depending on the diagnosis that each one of them has. Some are given activated carbon, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories”.

The turtles will be released once their treatment is complete and their red tide levels drop.
