USA: Pompeo vows to put more pressure on the Venezuelan government

United States, Washington DC
January 17, 2020 at 21:14 GMT +00:00 · Published

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promised to put more pressure on the Venezuelan government saying "Maduro certainly knows that we mean business" while addressing The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington DC on Friday.

"You all should know that more actions will be coming. Maduro certainly knows that we mean business. That's why he sought to withdraw Venezuela from this institution, the OAS," Pompeo said.

Pompeo praised the Secretary General of the Organization of American States Luis Almagro saying "Secretary Almagro is fearless in guarding against authoritarian regimes he believes in multilateralism that holds people accountable that puts new ideas on the table and forces countries to take a position."

The US Secretary of State urged for more action to be taken by multilateral institutions saying "Sleepwalking elements of the international order must wake up. Wishful thinking won't restrain authoritarians in Caracas or in Beijing or in Tehran."
