Puerto Rico: Local rapper ‘Residente’ joins protesters to demand governor’s resignation

Puerto Rico, San Juan

Hundreds marched in the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan on Thursday to demand the resignation of Governor Wanda Vazquez for her alleged mismanagement after the strong earthquakes that shook the country on January 7.

The march, held under the slogan "Stop criminal negligence, Wanda resign," was called for by Calle 13 music band leader Rene Perez, better known as "Residente," who participated in the mass demonstration along with San Luis Cardinals baseball player Yadier Molina.

Hundreds of demonstrators demanded general elections to be brought forward to November 3 in view of a new scandal involving the island's government.

Last Saturday, a warehouse was discovered with thousands of undelivered supplies, such as bottles water and folding beds that were being stored in a warehouse in the city of Ponce, one of the most affected by the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the island on January 7. Some of the products intended to help the population were damaged, according to local media reports.
